How to create weak-ties; this one of the most powerful components of Network Science;

There is an interesting article by Brian Uzzi and Shannon Dunlap in the Harvard Business Review on network science. In their “How to Build Your Network” they brought up the Paul Revere and William Dawes example. Both rode on horseback on the same night shouting and knocking on doors shouting. “The British are coming…the British are coming!” People responded to Paul Revere and took immediate action; those who heard William Dawes didn’t.

What was the cause of the different responses? Paul Revere had created a network of weak-ties who trusted Paul. Dawes had not. Without trusted weak ties your message (and likewise your DyVal) does not spread rapidity.

How do you create trusted weak ties? The Harvard article recommends that you join a cause bigger than yourself. They don’t call it “a higher social and moral purpose” yet that is exactly what they are recommending. The do say, that working with others on a project that has a higher social and moral purpose “will build trust quickly, even among diverse individuals.”
